Public School Systems
Most public schools are part of county-wide systems with the exception being the Chapel Hill/Carrboro city system. Students have options for academic emphasis as well as the type of school year calendar in the public school system, grades K through 12. The traditional schools offer a core of base studies along with a host of electives with a standard nine-month school year. The year-around schools offer the same curriculum but with a 12-month school year divided into four tracks with three- to four-week vacations between tracks. The magnet schools offer specialized curriculums with major emphasis in several disciplines based on the student's future plans.
All of these programs are not available in every area, so parents should review the county school web sites and contact the Board of Education for specifics.
